Stockist Spotlight: Quirky Kids
How would you describe your product range?
Quirky Kids Online source innovative treasures from around the globe that make children’s learning, life and laughter a little bit quirky. We understand that everyone is different, so our aim is to offer products that let you and your children express your individual styles and personalities. Our product range covers many different categories from ROOM THINGS and THE GREAT OUTDOORS through to LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT, ARTS AND CRAFTS plus the all important... PLAYTHINGS. In a nut shell we are trying to find things that are a bit different because from our experience with 5 children between the two of us (my business partner and I) it is always the quirky stuff that is most played with, most admired by little friends and most asked about by envious mums and dads.
What do you look for when choosing products for your stores?
Like a lot of people we like to be the first to find something new so we jump on trade fairs and review blogs to find those products that we feel make the perfect fit with our brand. But something new still needs to be functional, cost effective, high quality and quirky at the same time. There is no point making an individual statement with a groovy back pack that doesn't have room for all the essentials. We have some items in our store that are simply must haves, that are essential to compliment the whole product mix. Then we have other quirky products that are offered exclusively through a minimum amount of retailers and these are the ones that customers keep coming back for again and again. Offering these quirky products is what we want to be known for.
Why do you think Printspace products appeal to your clients?
Printspace Birth Prints appeal to our clients. In a cost effective and quirky way, customers can create an exclusive art piece with a new borns individual details to spoil themselves or a friend. For a lot of our customers it is all about being different and giving someone a gift or buying something to spoil yourself that is unique and special. Myself as a gift giver like to find things that are not available everywhere and you're not going to walk into your friends house and find exactly the same thing up on the wall. I think our clients are similar, looking for something different and personal and Printspace birth prints are exactly that, unique and individual.

Sneak Peek... a new bird
It's always tricky to come up with new work, when there's no deadline in sight.... Feb 2011 sounds so far away.... so Nick and I imposed our own and whola! A new bird. He or she is currently nameless. But that's ok, the name will come. I hope. While I madly pack for Bowerbird Bazaar this Friday in Adelaide, this little treasure's name will spring into my mind. Fingers crossed! xx

The inspired work of Alberto Cerriteno
Today I was wandering around online as you do when you are avoiding work... and found this lovely work by Alberto Cerriteno. A fabulous Mexican illustrator and designer who now lives in the US. I found his work via Grain Edit, one of my favs. Their aesthetic is just spot on - for me anyway! Love it all. Anyway, if you are interested in seeing more work he has an Etsy shop. Too easy.

Titled 'Box Step 1' by Rachel Castle, this is such a stunning piece. I do love her work, and the colours she uses are so joyful. Fills you with happiness, even when you are stuck at home with a cold! Maybe a birthday treat? Still several months away but we need to plan these things!

Vitra...designer heaven.
Vitra, a Swiss design company with beautiful furniture and products!
The top picture is of the Eames Elephant, designed in 1953, by Charles and Ray Eames. The Vitra version was launched in 2007. Only two of the original plywood designs were ever made.
The second picture is of Alexander Girard's Wooden Dolls. Just lovely.

Stockist Spotlight : Blackbird and Fox
Eclectic! Blackbird & Fox stocks homewares, gifts, stationery and accessories from literally dozens of brands and makers from around Australia and the world. Locally made silver jewellery sits alongside Tasmanian woollens, handcrafted American kitchenware, French cutlery, Danish wall stickers and more!
673-681 Glenferrie Road
Hawthorn VIC 3122
www.blackbirdandfox.com.au

What do you look for when choosing products for your stores?
Colour is always the first thing to catch my eye, and that is specifically what I wanted to bring to the Glenferrie Road shopping strip. Beigey, neutral colours and whitewashed furniture are a safe option, but it’s not as if your homewares are suddenly going to jump up and attack you, so live a little dangerously and pump up the colour! I’ve also made a concerted effort to stock local products, whether they be made in Melbourne, or from farther afield in Australia. Why do you think Printspace products appeal to your clients?
I think Printspace products appeals to my customers for the same reasons they appeal to me – great colours, playful motifs and an extensive range of designs to choose from! Being designed and printed in Melbourne also adds that little bit extra special something, especially when purchasing gifts for friends and family abroad. Blackbird and Fox

oh ah more loveliness... Helbak Scherning
Two very talented women from Denmark make up this gorgeous shop which I would love to visit.
One does ceramics (Helbak), the other jewelry (Scherning), Simple shapes, delicious colours. You can't look at this stuff and not feel good.
A customer of ours commented on one of the Helbak pieces we have in our products shots, and how she has just come back from a trip in Europe which included visiting this shop.... (oh, I am very jealous!!). I promptly hopped online to find out more about this little piece of ceramic heaven (of which I knew nothing about, shame on me) and you can too, have a look see here, it's lovely.

Stockist Spotlight... Stork's Corner
How would you describe your product range?
Stylish but not designer, inspiring, unique and fun! We cater for both contemporary and classic preferences. This therefore covers off both younger generations of parents and older generations of grandparents! Our product assortment covers a broad range of categories, including Clothing, Shoes, Bed Linen, Room Decor, Toys, Gifts and Stationery. We love providing our customers with such a wide choice. Whether they are coming in for a gift, a school drink bottle, a new pair of shoes, or to completely decorate an entire room, we can help them - joy!
What do you look for when choosing products for your stores?
Quality, aesthetic appeal and price. And yes, we do try and source different and unique labels that are not found in the mainstream arena. Our customers really appreciate coming into our store and finding something different. Examples of this would be Printspace artwork, Patersonrose linen and Petit Cupcake dresses.
Having said that, we do of course stock some more well know labels, such as Oobi and Penny Scallan. These labels represent iconic Australian brands that are well known and well loved by a broader customer base. They help attract customers into our store, where they then find the 'hidden treasures' of lesser known brands! And are joyous with their discovery!
Why do you think Printspace products appeal to your clients ?
The designs are eye catching and appealing. They work well with both nursery decor and rooms for older children. Customers like being able to build their own art series and have that personal touch. The designs are classic yet on trend - birds, owls - we can't get enough of them at the moment! And the fact that it is an Australian design company is always well received.

Stockist Spotlight... Cot Couture
How would you describe your product range?
Cot Couture is a eclectic mix of modern, classic and retro style children's bedding. We custom make all of our comforters, cushions and quilt covers and we love helping customers create their own unique space for their children's room. We like being that little bit different, and take pride in the fact that everything is handmade in Adelaide by local people.
What do you look for when choosing products for your stores?
I look for inspired pieces, and I love having original, hand made products that you can't find everywhere. I specifically look for products that are made in Australia too.
Why do you think Printspace products appeal to your clients?
My clients love having art that ties in with the bedding that they have purchased. It is always modern, original and I believe the illustrations have an underlying theme of love in every piece. In a baby's nursery there is no better place to have Printspace's artwork.
I am also a regular customer and I use Printspace artwork in all of my photshoots and nursery displays and there is always an artpiece that co-ordinates with every fabric. Mara is also a wonderful lady and it is an absolute pleasure to work with her :) [Thanks Jess, we love your shop!]

Sneak Peek at our new range...
Nick and I have been busy little bees creating our new range, and here is a little peek at some of the new prints. You may have seen the middle one before, as "You What' has popped up on the blog before.... but Nick's "Birdman" is brand spanking, and rather nice. The top one is one of mine, and a little play with my fav quote about living the life. We will be launching the full new range at Life Instyle Trade Show (along with some trusty oldies) but if you pop into Magnolia Square this week they will be there too. xx

Our studio and some penguins...
That orange is so bright! I am loving Nick's prints in the rather large size..... I do love the penguins but the other super large print in our studio is my fav.... title... Large Animal. Is it a horse or is it a dog or is it something else that I haven't even thought of. Who can tell. Nick won't confirm either which way. Anyway, it doesn't matter, it always makes my day when I see it.
